• Matches between PV Sindhu and Akane Yamaguchi are standalone sensations – Saturday’s 21-15, 15-21, 21-19 win for the Indian was a rollicking roller-coaster.

They’ve faced off 21 times starting from juniors through to Olympics, and the ability to throw up a classic, even while all eyes are on the Worlds in Spain in 10 days, makes the duo engaging entertainers.

Saturday happened to be the semifinals of the year-ending World Tour Finals. And such is the opulence in depth in women’s singles that even without half the top players turning up in Bali, there were still four semifinalists who managed to put on a captivating spectacle.

  • HAPPY BERNIE MAC DAY!! On November 14, 2016, Steve Harvey read a proclamation (during his talk show) from the then mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emmanuel proclaiming “Nov 14th Bernie Mac Day”. This date was chosen to commemorate the airing of Bernie’s hit tv show “The Bernie Mac Show”. During the taping of the show, Steve invited Bernie’s wife Rhonda, daughter Je’Niece and his one and only granddaughter Jasmine..all of which were overcome with emotion because they had no clue that Bernie would be bestowed with such an honor. Bernie and Steve’s comedy king brothers DL Hugley, Cedric the Entertainer and the original host of “The Original Kings of Comedy” tour, Guy Tory joined them as well. Comedic great Mike Epps added to this auspicious day by revealing “The Bernie Mac Auditorium” at Bernie and Rhonda’s alma mater Chicago Vocational School. Today and everyday, we celebrate HIS LIFE, HIS LAUGHTER and HIS LEGACY...and what a great one he left! • Movie Name: Dead Poets Society

“A talented Robbin Williams makes Dead Poets Society a film for all ages and thanks to its direction, and well-dated themes the film remains relatable even after so many years.”

    SharpRatings: 8 - #Great

John Keating (#RobinWilliams) inspires a class of youth with his nonconformist teaching style and poetry. I don’t see #DeadPoetsSociety as an underrated movie but in fact, it's one of few films that are rightly and correctly rated. Dead Poets Society is based on a play of the same name. It is an inspiring, uplifting, and moral tale firmly grounded in reality is not nearly as appreciated as it should be. This is one of Robin Williams's finest performances-I do believe he should have been at least nominated for best actor and either the guy who plays Neil or Ethan Hawk should have been nominated for best supporting actor. The friendships that are forged in the school are genuine and believable and the people are those that you can relate to. In contrast to all other teachers, Mr. Keating´s Teaching Methods are unorthodox and are based on democratic principles. He tries to teach them to be freethinkers and wants to inspire them but he doesn't think about the consequences. Is the film a perfect one? No, there are many flaws but they are pretty minor, go unnoticed. I felt like it was a bit melodramatic at times. No high school-aged kids are going to be talking like this in real life, it's definitely overdramatized. The authoritative characters are exaggerated as well, in my opinion. But I get it it's based on a play and things like this work in entertainer biz. Overall, there is a lot to like about the movie. Cinematography, characterizations, actors, etc. I really liked how it leaves you feeling for Keating's character at the end, while also in many ways arguing against his actions.

    Bonus
    Robbin Williams. Direction. Cast performance.

  • last night, sean penn celebrated his 61st birthday.
on this day, in 2017 sean and i had a private dinner.
we were joined for desserts by his then girlfriend and now wife, leila george. that's when this picture was taken.
marlon brando once said sean was america's greatest living actor.
i could go on about the professional achievements of this two time 'academy award' winner and a body of work that will always stand the test of time.
i could also write about his brilliance outside of the world of show business. there are only 3 people i personally encountered along the entertainment highway that i consider true intellectuals....sean, jack nicholson and bob dylan. when i find myself in their company, i listen 4 times as much as i speak ... and reflect upon what is shared long after we say goodnight.
    all that for another time.
tonights, 'lead' has to do with the simple fact that i cannot think of a single entertainer in recent years who has given of themselves in humanitarian relief efforts more than sean penn.
i encourage you to visit the website of an organization he founded (along with ann lee) called CORE which stands for 'community organized relief efforts'.....info@coreresponse.org
    a few 'talking points':
in 2010 after an earthquake hit haiti resulting in the death of 300,000 people, sean participated in a massive ongoing relief effort. not only did he raise funds, he lived among the haitians for 9 straight months engaging in daily 'hands on work'.
we are not talking about 'red carpets'.
during the past 18 months, CORE has administered 5.3 million covid tests ...... and provided more than 1.6 million vaccines.
they have also provided an additional 60,000 vaccines in brazil, puerto rico and india.
sean and his organization have set up 'community based' programs in the underserved black and brown communities and such places as the 'navaho indian nation'......which covers 17 million acres.
if you go to the CORE website now, you will learn they already have 'boots on the ground' in haiti administering relief in the wake of last saturday's 7.2 magnitude quake.
    they need our support.
my conversations with sean are private, of course ...
but when he discusses his passion to make a difference in this world for the greater good, he does so with a passion commensurate to the challenges we are all facing. and he goes the distance.
    he is the 'real deal'.
wishing sean penn a happy birthday.
