Walter Hill is known for his action films and revival of the Western genre.

The acclaimed director is at the helm of “Dead for a Dollar,” which is currently filming in Santa Fe through August.

The cast is loaded with A-list actors Christoph Waltz, Willem Dafoe and Rachel Brosnahan.

Hill also wrote the script.

The film is set in the New Mexico Territory, Chihuahua in 1897.

It follows Max Borlund, played by Waltz, who is a famed bounty hunter, hired to find and return Rachel Price. She is the wife of Nathan Price, a successful Santa Fe businessman and has been kidnapped for ransom.

Borlund travels to Mexico and runs into Joe Cribbens, played by Dafoe, who is his sworn enemy.

Borland finds out that Rachel Price has fled from her abusive husband and is faced with the decision of leaving her or returning her to Santa Fe.

“It’s exciting to have western genre legend Walter Hill in New Mexico with an incredible cast and crew to shoot ‘Dead for a Dollar,’ ” said Amber Dodson, New Mexico Film Office director.

The production will employ approximately 80 New Mexico crew members, 20 New Mexico principal cast members, and 40 New Mexico background and extras, according to the New Mexico Film Office.

The film is being produced by Berry Meyerowitz, Neil Dunn, Carolyn McMaster, Kirk D’Amico and Jeremy Wall. Executive Producers are Jeff Sackman, Larry Greenberg, Waltz, Lawrence Mortorff, and Alex Habrich.

“Walter Hill is an important figure in American movie history and he returns to his most potent genre — the Western,” the producers said in a release. “We are thrilled to shoot in the No. 1 western location in the world — New Mexico.”
