74th Army Day observed at War Memorial in Pune

THE 74th Army Day was marked at the War Memorial in Pune, with the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, Lieutenant General J S Nain laying a wreath and paying homage to those who made the supreme sacrifice while safeguarding the sovereignty of the nation.
Army Day is celebrated on January 15 to mark this day of 1949 when Lieutenant General and later Field Marshal K M Cariappa took charge as Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from Lieutenant General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief. Each year on this day, the soldiers of the Army, who have set an example of courage and sacrifice, are honoured.
The Southern Command, which is responsible for guarding the country’s western borders, has taken part in all major military operations since independence and has also provided aid to citizens in times of natural calamities and other disasters.

Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India, in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's (then a Lieutenant General) taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Fransis Bucher , the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949.[1][2] The day is celebrated in the form of parades and other military shows in the national capital New Delhi as well as in all headquarters.[3] On 15 January 2022, India celebrated its 74rd Indian Army Day in New Delhi.[4][5] Army Day marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and its citizens.[6]
While celebrations take place across the country, the main Army Day parade is conducted in Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi cantonment. Gallantry awards and Sena medals are also awarded on this day. In 2020, 15 soldiers were presented with bravery awards. Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra awardees participate in the Army Day parade every year.[7][8] Military hardware, numerous contingents and a combat display are part of the parade.[7] In 2020, Captain Tania Shergill became the first female officer to command an Army Day parade.[9][10]

Former India goalkeeper Sanat Seth, who was part of the 1954 Asian Games squad, died on Friday after prolonged illness.
Seth, 91, was suffering from age-related problems and breathed his last on Friday morning, according to family sources. He lost his wife last year and has left behind his son.
Known for his acrobatic saves under the bar, Seth began his journey at the Eastern Railway FC in 1949 before moving to Aryan Club in 1951. He then moved to East Bengal in 1957 and the next year he joined their arch-rivals Mohun Bagan, where he played for six years.

The Central bank levied the fine of Rs 1.8 crore on Punjab National Bank (PNB) for contravention of sub-section (2) of section 19 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 (the Act).

ICICI Bank has been slapped a penalty of Rs 30 lakh by the apex bank.

"This action is based on the deficiencies in regulatory compliance and is not intended to pronounce upon the validity of any transaction or agreement entered into by the bank with its customers," read RBI's statement.

After considering the bank’s reply to the notice, oral submissions made during the personal hearing, and additional submissions made by the bank.
