At the crest of this seismic shift is Prime Minister-elect Anthony Albanese himself, a Labor party politician with humble roots. Nicknamed ‘Albo’, he was born in 1963 and raised by a single mother on a disability pension.

Albo’s financially precarious childhood saw him growing up in public housing in the seedy suburbs of Sydney’s inner west. According to his website, he was the first person in his family to finish school, let alone university.
