AAP stuns Congress with dominating win; Bhagwat Mann set to be next CM:

Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday emerged victorious in the Punjab Assembly Elections 2022, with a sweeping victory on 92 out of the 117 assembly seats. The runner-up, Congress was able to secure 18 seats, while Shiromani Akali Dal won only three seats. AAP leader Bhagwant Mann is set to become the new Chief Minister of the state.

AAP’s chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann won from Dhuri Assembly seat by a margin of over 58,000 votes. In his maiden speech following the election victory, Mann thanked the people of Punjab and said his party will work together to bring the state back on the development track.

The trends so far suggest that the BJP will be back for a second term in Uttar Pradesh with an overwhelming majority while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is set to wrest power from Congress in Punjab. The saffron party is leading in about 270 seats in UP while AAP has taken a lead in over 92 constituencies in Punjab. In Uttarakhand, BJP has taken a lead in over 45 seats as Harish Rawat, the CM face of Congress in the state, is trailing. The leads also show a neck-and-neck fight in Goa with the BJP pulling slightly ahead of Congress. In the northeastern state of Manipur, BJP has taken a lead in over 20 seats, with incumbent CM N Biren Singh ahead in Heingang.

AAP's Bhagwant Mann Says Oath Not At Punjab Raj Bhawan, Instead...


Punjab Chief Minister-elect Bhagwant Mann drew cheers from the crowd on Thursday as he announced that his oath-taking ceremony will be held at Khatkarkalan in Nawanshahr district, the ancestral village of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.
He also announced that government offices will not have the photo of the Chief Minister as is the custom.

"The oath-taking ceremony will not be held at Raj Bhawan, but at Khatkarkalan. The date will be announced later," he said in his victory speech in Dhuri, where he won by over 58,000 votes.

"No government office will carry a picture of Chief Minister, instead there will be pictures of Bhagat Singh and BR Ambedkar," Mr Mann announced.

The Aam Aadmi Party is leading in a majority of seats in Punjab, with chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann leading while sitting CM Charanjit Singh Channi is trailing in both his seats. In his victory speech, soon-to-be Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann thanked the people of Punjab for posing faith in him and the Aam Aadmi Party. Without taking name, Mann took a swipe at Captain Amarinder Singh and said that “earlier, the state government used to be run from palaces, but now we have brought the government to pinds (villages).” Mann said that now, the state government will run from pinds, from mohallas and cities. Promising a sport university in Jallandhar, Mann said that his first priority is to tackle the issue of joblessness in Punjab.

Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is all set for a spectacular in the Punjab assembly elections. Trends from the counting of votes show the party taking an unassailable lead, as predicted by all exit polls earlier. In what was earlier being seen as a fierce multi-cornered fight, Congress has been dislodged to second place, possibly losing half its vote share, and Akalis are struggling to catch up. All heavyweight non-AAP leaders are trailing in their constituencies.
As of 1:20 pm, trends have AAP at 91 and Congress at 17 out of total 117 seats. Akalis are at 6 and BJP and allies at 2.

"This shows AAP is the natural and national replacement of the Congress," said Raghav Chadha, who ran the Punjab campaign for his party, in an exclusive interview with NDTV.
