Quando ero un attore 22enne che si arrangiava a New York, e non sapevo come avrei pagato l'affitto del mese successivo, il mio amico Kevin mi disse molto gentilmente che stava lavorando alla copertina di un libro per la quale potevo essere adatto. Quel libro si è rivelato essere l'incredibile "Rainbow Boys" di Alex Sanchez. Ero molto grato di avere una scrittura, ma ero anche terrorizzato che una delle prime cose che facessi fosse a tema LGBTQ. Per tutta la vita mi hanno detto che essere gay era un ostacolo nel mio settore, in particolare in quel momento, e pensavo che tutti avrebbero saputo il mio segreto. Credevo che avrebbe potuto far deragliare la mia carriera prima ancora che iniziasse. Vorrei poter dire al me stesso 22enne che il suo "segreto" non era nulla di cui aver paura o vergogna, e che anche se lo attendevano delle sfide, alla fine ciò avrebbe reso la sua carriera gratificante e diversificata. Buon Pride a tutti voi, ma soprattutto a quelli che non hanno il coraggio di dichiararsi, preoccupati che quel che sono sia qualcosa di cui aver paura. Vi amiamo e vi aspettiamo! ✌🏳️‍🌈🦄💜 When I was a 22 year old struggling actor in NYC, and I didn’t know how I was going to pay my next month’s rent, my friend Kevin very graciously told me that there was a book cover he was working on that I might be right for. That book turned out to be Alex Sanchez’s incredible Rainbow Boys. I was very grateful to have a gig, but I was also terrified that one of the first things I’d done was LGBTQ themed. I had been told my entire life that being gay was a liability in my industry, particularly at that time, and I thought that everyone would know my secret. I thought it might derail my career before it even started. I wish I could tell my 22 year old self that his ‘secret’ was nothing to be scared or ashamed of, and that even though it would come with challenges, it would ultimately be what made his career rewarding and diverse. Happy #Pride to all of you, but especially to the ones waiting in the wings- worried that who you are is something to be afraid of- we love you, and we’re waiting for you.
