Il laureato (1967) di Mike Nichols lo trasforma nel giro di pochi mesi da caratterista sconosciuto a divo candidato all'Oscar, che segnerà gli anni settanta con alcune intensebe significative interpretazioni. Attore versatile, "sobrio, flemmatico, energico" passa con disinvoltura dal thriller (Cane di paglia, 1971, Il maratoneta, 1976) alla commedia (Tootsie, 1982), dal genere realistico di denuncia (Un uomo da marciapiede, 1969) al film politico (Tutti gli uomini del presidente, 1975), da quello d'avventura (Papillon, 1973) a quello fantastico (Hook - Capitan Uncino, 1991).

Nella lunga carriera ha tratteggiato personaggi di forte drammaticità e complessità "con i quali attraversa più di trent'anni di cinema americano": da Il piccolo grande uomo (1970) di Arthur Penn al marito ribelle di Cane di paglia (1971) di Sam Peckinpah, dal padre in lotta per la custodia del figlio di Kramer contro Kramer (1979), fino allo struggente Raymond, l'autistico di Rain Man - L'uomo della pioggia (1988). Watched out of curiosity, and in light of the notoriety surrounding this Dustin Hoffman thriller, ‘Marathon Man’, while not devoid of violent undertones, does little to surprise or compel until the closing moments of the film, but even then I can’t help but feel the script was too ambitious in trying to translate from the novel upon which it was based.

The direction is choppy, with poor use of space and landscapes, while the music is often slightly disjointed, which only serves to weaken its overall impact, and so for me, this is not a movie I would contemplate watching twice, which comes to a something of a shame given the reviews and articles written about it.

That said, if you’re a Dustin Hoffman fan, he does a great job in bringing emotion and honesty to the proceedings, so for that reason alone, it’s worth a look at least once.

Rating: Need More Patience.
