Carbon fibre production: Fascinating uses of Carbon Fibre in Several Industries!

Carbon fibre has brought a revolution to the manufacturing industry with its extremely lightweight yet stronger-than-steel properties. Its outstanding resilience as a manufacturing material makes it a suitable material to use for multiple purposes. Various structural materials, such as titanium, aluminium, and steel, have been replaced by carbon fibre composites.

Carbon fibre is a unique material!

Some of the most common essential properties are strength, rigidity, and fatigue resistance. Composites that contain carbon fibre are twice as stiff and five times stronger than steel, which has changed the entire manufacturing process. Additionally, the material exhibits excellent fatigue properties and corrosion resistance, making it a better option compared to steel alloys. However, with various carbon fibre production processes, different types of carbon fibre with unique and rare properties can be produced.

What are the types of carbon fibre?

Depending on raw materials, final heat treatment, and mechanical properties, Kohlefaser Herstellung can be classified into various categories.

  • PAN-based carbon fiber

The carbon fibre type, as its name indicates, is created through the PAN carbonisation process. With its high tensile strength, the kind of carbon fibre used in industries that require high-end materials, such as aerospace or the creation of recreational sports products, enhances the performance of athletes.

  • Pitch-based carbon fibre

This is another type of carbon fibre manufactured through the carbonisation of oil to achieve properties tailored to the specific requirements of various applications. With the different carbon fibre production processes, properties can be altered according to the application needs. If high-stiffness components are required, carbon fibre with an ultra-high elastic modulus is a suitable choice.

Other types of carbon fibres are Mesophase pitch-based, Rayon-based, Isotrophic pitch-based or gas phase-grown carbon fibres.

Properties:

Carbon fibre has a high strength-to-weight ratio. It comes with a rigidity nature. Other properties of carbon fibre include corrosion resistance and chemical stability. It is non-flammable, fire-resistant, thermally conductive, non-poisonous, biologically inert and brittle. The various properties make it a unique material when compared to the other materials.

Carbon fibre types based on mechanical properties!

  • Ultra-high elastic modulus type (UHM): The elastic modulus of it is 600 GPa or higher, with a tensile strength of 2,500 MPa. With the property of ultra-high modulus, all applications that require high stiffness per unit weight utilize this type of Kohlefaserplatten. The UHM carbon fibre is used in applications such as satellites, drones, and various kinds of sports gear.

  • High elastic modulus type: The elastic modulus of such carbon type ranges from 300 to 600 GPA, while the tensile strength is more than 2,500 MPa.

  • Intermediate elastic modulus type: In the intermediate elastic modulus type, the elastic modulus lies between 250 to 350 GPA, while the tensile strength is around 3,500 MPa.

There are two other types of carbon fibre present, named standard elastic modulus type and low elastic modulus type.  The list of types is based on the various mechanical properties.
