The United States and Europe urged Russia on Monday to stop alleged sexual violence by its army and proxies in Ukraine, allegations that Moscow denounced as "lies".

The pleas were made during a meeting of the UN Security Council, organized by Albania, which currently holds the rotating presidency.

"It is on Russia to stop rape, violence, and atrocities from within its ranks. It is on Russia to end this unconscionable, unprovoked war on the people of Ukraine, and we call on the Russian Federation to do just that," said US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers also offers a chance to honour around 4,200 peacekeepers who lost their lives serving under the UN flag since, including 135 who lost the battle last year. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that this year, the focus is on the Power of Partnerships.

Sri Lankan police on Monday came under pressure to arrest the Rajapaksa family loyalists involved in attacks on peaceful protesters last week, even as it arrested over 200 people on various charges following the violence that left nine people dead.
The clashes forced a curfew being imposed last Monday.
Police have arrested some 230 people on charges including violation of curfew, attacking the public and causing damages to public and private properties since May 9.
“The police said they have already arrested over 200 people for attacking the government politicians. We condemn such violence. But they have no hurry to arrest the government-backed attackers of protesters," Nuwan Bopage from the young lawyers’ association told reporters.
