My Grandfather fought the World War for the Allies. He starved for most of it as Indian soldiers were last on the priority list for being fed.

The Allies did not even give him a blanket warm enough to comfortably survive his return journey. He shivered his way back from Europe and was one of the lucky ones to make it.

While he was fighting for them, 30,00,000 people in Bengal died by a man-made famine that Winston Churchill created. (Link in Comments) The 3 most remarkable things for me were:
- British didn't even need that food, Churchill and the crown wanted to keep spares 'just in case' Yugoslavia and Greece were attacked.
- Churchill's response to Indian deaths was: 'Why hasn't Gandhi died yet?' and 'It is the fault of Indians that they breed like rats'.
- This mass-murdering monster was voted the greatest British person ever. He is glorified in Oscar winning movies like The Darkest Hour and King's Speech. Not one 'Woke' Hollywood celebrity spoke against it because the people whom he killed unfortunately had the wrong skin colour.

The British Monarchs are living monuments of colonialism that have killed millions of people simply because they looked different. My Grandfather and his fellow freedom fighters survived an uphill battle of tolerance vs brutality, only to have this generation mourn the death of a monarch.

Many might have felt worse on her death had she returned some of our stolen jewellery or apologised for the numerous genocides that happened right under her watch. I fail to understand what exactly did she do that deserves India and Africa mourning her death? As they say in The Crown - 'Her job was to do nothing' and that she did.

No death should ever be celebrated and I wish Queen Elizabeth would rest in peace, just like the other 150,000 people who died that day. Today India has a State Mourning for her, but many have expressed their inability to feel major sorrow on her death and I hope you understand why.

Colourful pageant, street fests cap Queen’s Platinum Jubilee:

A colourful street pageant highlighting Britain’s diversity paraded through central London on Sunday, the final day of a long holiday weekend honouring Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne.

In a crowning moment for her Platinum Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth II waved at tens of thousands of adoring crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace, delighting fans who had hoped to catch a glimpse of her during the final day of festivities.

With the ringing of bells at Westminster Abbey, a spectacular military parade featuring 200 horses began the ceremony as they marched down the Mall to Buckingham Palace.

They flanked the gilded gold state coach, a horse-drawn carriage that transported the queen to her coronation 69 years ago.

The queen wasn’t taking part in the pageant though a virtual version of her, drawn from archival video from her 1953 coronation, was shown in the coach’s windows.

Under-equipped German army gets 100 billion euro makeover:

Broadcast three times a week in the second half of the evening on the public channel ZDF, Markus Lanz's talk show is one of the most watched in Germany. On May 18, the host invited the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces of the Bundestag onto his show. This position, which has been held by the former MP Eva Högl (SPD, Social Democratic Party) since 2020, is best known to the general public for its annual report on the state of the Bundeswehr, the armed forces of Germany.

During the program, Ms. Högl obviously could not address all the points made in the 178 pages of her latest report, published on March 15. But she summarized the main idea: "We live in one of the richest countries in the world, in the heart of Europe, and our 184,000 soldiers do not even have the equipment they need. This is a scandal!"

Israeli military ID's *** that may have killed journalist:

The Israeli military has identified a soldier's rifle that may have killed Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, but said it cannot be certain unless the Palestinians turn over the bullet for analysis, a military official said Thursday.

The confirmation marked a small sign of progress in the investigation into the killing of Abu Akleh, who was fatally shot on May 11 while covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian officials, along with fellow journalists who were with Abu Akleh, have said Israeli troops stationed nearby killed her. The Israeli army says she was shot during a battle between troops and Palestinian gunmen, and it cannot be determined who fired the fatal bullet without a proper analysis.

Anti-govt protesters from Sri Lanka’s Sinhala majority mourn Tamil victims of civil war:

Sri Lankan protesters have lit flames and offered prayers remembering thousands – including ethnic Tamil civilians – killed in the final stages of the country’s decades-long civil war.
It was the first-ever event in the island nation where mostly majority ethnic Sinhalese openly memorialised the minority group.
Protesters gathered outside the president’s office in the main city of Colombo on Wednesday, floated flowers in the nearby sea and prayed for all those who died in the 26-year civil war, including Tamil civilians, Tamil rebels and government soldiers.
The head of the separatist Tamil Tiger movement, Velupillai Prabhakaran, was shot dead by security forces on May 18, 2009, bringing a formal end to the bloody ethnic war.

Interrogation, uncertainty for surrendering Mariupol troops:

Nearly 1,000 last-ditch Ukrainian fighters who had held out inside Mariupol’s pulverized steel plant have surrendered, Russia said Wednesday, as the battle that turned the city into a worldwide symbol of defiance and suffering drew toward a close.

Meanwhile, the first captured Russian soldier to be put on trial by Ukraine on war-crimes charges pleaded guilty to killing a civilian and could get life in prison. Finland and Sweden applied to join NATO, abandoning generations of neutrality for fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not stop with Ukraine.

The Ukrainian fighters who emerged from the ruined Azovstal steelworks after being ordered by their military to abandon the last stronghold of resistance in the now-flattened port city face an uncertain fate. Some were taken by the Russians to a former penal colony in territory controlled by Moscow-backed separatists.

Ukraine conflict:

Russian soldiers seen killing unarmed civilians... When Leonid Pliats and his boss were shot in the back by Russian soldiers, the killing was captured on CCTV cameras in clear and terrible detail. The footage, which was obtained by the BBC, is now being investigated by Ukrainian prosecutors as a suspected war crime.

It was the height of the fighting around Kyiv and the main roads into the capital were a battlefield, including around the bicycle shop where Leonid worked as a security guard.

But this was no firefight: the video clearly shows heavily armed Russian soldiers shooting the two unarmed Ukrainians and then looting the business.

Ukrainian forces collect Russian dead left behind:

After combing the forests and meadows west of Kyiv, a special Ukrainian unit finally found what they were searching for —- the body of a Russian "occupier".

For weeks, the team along with similar outfits operating in conjunction with a civil-military cooperation unit have been pulling Russian corpses from the fields, forests, and destroyed structures on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital.

"If they (Russian forces) won’t do what they were supposed to do as a matter of honour, then we will do it out of respect for the dead," a soldier going by the call sign Mukhomor told AFP Wednesday just moments after unearthing the body of a slain Russian soldier.
