Rise to fame, early conquests Of Ranjit Singh: Ranjit Singh's fame grew in 1797, at age 17, when the Afghan Muslim ruler Shah Zaman, of the Ahmad Shah Abdali dynasty, attempted to annex Panjab region into his control through his general Shahanchi Khan and 12,000 soldiers. The battle was fought in the territory that fell in Ranjit Singh controlled misl, whose regional knowledge and warrior expertise helped resist the invading army. This victory gained him recognition. In 1798, the Afghan ruler sent in another army, which Ranjit Singh did not resist. He let them enter Lahore, then encircled them with his army, blocked off all food and supplies, burnt all crops and food sources that could have supported the Afghan army. Much of the Afghan army retreated back to Afghanistan. In 1799, Raja Ranjit Singh's army of 25,000 Khalsa, supported by another 25,000 Khalsa led by his mother-in-law Rani Sada Kaur of Kanhaiya misl, in a joint operation attacked the region controlled by Bhangi Sikhs centered around Lahore. The rulers escaped, marking Lahore as the first major conquest of Ranjit Singh. The Sufi Muslim and Hindu population of Lahore welcomed the rule of Ranjit Singh. In 1800, the ruler of Jammu region ceded control of his region to Ranjit Singh. In 1801, Ranjit Singh proclaimed himself as the "Maharaja of Punjab", and agreed to a formal investiture ceremony, which was carried out by Baba Sahib Singh Bedi – a descendant of Guru Nanak. On the day of his coronation, prayers were performed across mosques, temples and gurudwaras in his territories for his long life. The Demolition of the Harmandir Sahib: In April 1757, Ahmad Shah Durrani raided Northern India for the fourth time. While he was on his way back to Kabul from Delhi with young men and women as captives, the Sikhs made a plan to relieve him of the valuables and free the captives. The squad of Baba Deep Singh was deployed near Kurukshetra. His squad freed a large number of prisoners and raided Durrani's considerable treasury. On his arrival in Lahore, Durrani, embittered by his loss, ordered the demolition of the Harmandir Sahib (the "Golden Gurudwara"). The shrine was blown up and the sacred pool filled with the entrails of slaughtered animals. Durrani assigned the Punjab region to his son, Prince Timur Shah, and left him a force of ten thousand men under General Jahan Khan. Baba Deep Singh, 75 years old, felt that it was up to him to atone for the sin of having let the Afghans desecrate the shrine. He emerged from scholastic retirement and declared to a congregation at Damdama Sahib that he intended to rebuild the temple. Five hundred men came forward to go with him. Baba Deep Singh offered prayers before starting for Amritsar: "May my head fall at the Darbar Sahib." As he went from hamlet to hamlet, many villagers joined him. By the time baba Deep Singh reached Tarn Taran Sahib, ten miles from Amritsar, over five thousand Sikhs armed with hatchets, swords, and spears accompanied him.

Sant Harnam Singh Bedi Ji: Punjab and its surrounding areas are full of great history. It is an honour that Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib ji planted the roots of Sikhi in this area. As Sikhi has grown there have been many saints and warriors that have resided in this area. There have been sacrifices for Sikhi in history and Damdami Taksal has always been at the forefront of these. One type of sacrifice is the sacrifice of a Giani, who studies Gurbani and then spends all of his time teaching and preaching to others. Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji Bedi made this sacrifice. Baba ji was a great kathakars, forever attached to the charan (feet) of Akal Purkh. They were taught the knowledge of Gurbani from Bhai Jaswant Singh ji. They also studied the Vars of Bhai Gurdas ji, Sri Gur Partap Suraj Granth, and other religious granths. After Sant Giani Bhagvan Singh ji left the world for Sach Khand. Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji Bedi became the jathedar of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib ji's Damdami Taksal. Baba ji taught many Gursikhs the understanding of Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji, Sri Dasam Granth Sahib ji, and other religious granths within Amritsar. Sant ji would also partake in the seva of Panj Pyare at Sri Akal Takhat Sahib ji where people would take Amrit and get initiated into the Khalsa Panth/Nation. Gursikhs taught by Baba ji, where ever they went, taught others the knowledge of Gurbani and spread the word of Sikhi. Sant ji would everyday go to Sri Akal Takhat Sahib and listen to the nitnem (daily prayers) and Shabad Keertan (singing of hymns). They started the method of doing translations by 'anve arth' - a unique method of translating Gurbani. Baba ji taught many famous Gursikhs such as: Sant Baba Bishan Singh ji Muralewale, Sant Giani Sundar Singh ji Bhindranwale, Mahant Haakam Singh ji Amritsar, Mahant Harnam Singh ji Muralewale and Sant Bishan Singh ji Kareet. Baba ji stayed at Dera Baba Joga Singh ji Amritsar and was the Head Granthi at Sri Harmandir Sahib ji. All the Gianis of that time, in Amritsar, were students of Baba ji. They never stopped teaching the understanding of Gurbani, even at a very old age. They also had the chance to teach many Nirmale, Udasis, Adanshahee and Majbee Sikhs. Sant Baba Harnam Singh ji Bedi would always wear black and left the world where they stayed at Dera Baba Joga Singh ji.

Siege of Banda's forces: Quite apart from the daring exploits of the ordinary Sikh soldier, there were strong rumours in the Mughal camps that Banda Singh had magical powers, and could transform himself into many shapes to escape captivity. Most of the Mughal commanders were afraid of a face to face encounter with Banda, and were conslantly pushing their Qazis and Mullas to the front to offer prayers to counter the spells of the enemy. Abdus Samad Khan openly prayed that Banda escaped from there, so that the whole business could be disposed off on any excuse. Only fresh orders from the Emperor to capture Banda dead or alive kept him at his task. He was taking new measures everyday to tighten the siege, to starve the defenders to submission. Qamar-ud-Din's forces were holding one half of the circle and his own forces were on the other half.
