The Growing Demand for Mexico E-Commerce

Reliable Internet connectivity, secure payment, and people trust internet shopping, more Mexicans now do their shopping online. Almost everybody in Mexico has internet access, and most prefer purchasing goods on the internet. There are many reasons Mercado Libre, Amazon, and Walmart are so popular—they are easy, have a variety of products, and usually have better prices. Due to the pandemic, those who had not shopped online before could start much sooner. Because of improving logistics, online payments, and dependable last-mile services, residents in urban and semi-urban areas are choosing digital retail shops. As a result, Mexico now leads other Latin American countries in e-commerce.

Latest Trends in the Mexico E-Commerce Market

The Mexico E-Commerce market is witnessing several emerging trends. Here are some of the key trends shaping the market:

Rise of Mobile Commerce

Mobile commerce is now more important in Mexico due to how quickly mobility has risen. In 2024 and beyond, as more than 95 million people with smartphones get involved in e-commerce via their phones, mobile e-commerce will surpass 70% of all sales. Doing mobile shopping is so easy, which is likely why many younger people feel drawn to it. Mercado Libre and Amazon are updating their mobile apps for users, and fintech companies are giving app users new options for completing payments. The result is that online stores are trying to create ads for mobiles and holding flash sales in their efforts to boost buying and reduce unwanted shopping cart abandonments.

Expansion of Social Commerce

Due to the increasing usage of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp, more Mexicans are choosing to buy goods online. At present, around 9 out of 10 Mexicans who go online every day use social networks, and it is becoming easier for them to access information as well as purchase goods there. Brands are adapting to evolving customer trends, thanks to influencers, online shopping events, and better ways to make purchases. At the forefront of e-commerce apps is Facebook, followed by Instagram and TikTok, adding in-app boutiques, shop tabs, and specialized tools for Mexican creators. Many micro and nano-influencers in country areas are helping bring e-commerce to more rural places.

Advancements in Logistics and Delivery

E-commerce growth in Mexico is strongly driven by the fast development of logistics and delivery services. Today’s logistics suppliers are investing a lot in improvements for last-mile delivery, advanced warehouses, and fulfillment centers. In 2024, an automated sorting facility in Mexico City opened by Cainiao, using AI technology, sorted through many packages daily, numbering more than 500,000. Afterward, Mercado Libre worked on its regional services to make sure orders for major city dwellers arrive within just a day. Both companies are partnering with smaller shops to cover areas they haven’t delivered to before. Some parts of Jalisco and Puebla already feature pilot projects for drones that drop off packages. Because of these improvements, it’s now easier for Mexico to handle shipments, and people are much more satisfied with shipping.

Diversification of Payment Methods

For many years, many Mexicans did not rely on banks for payments, but today, more digital payment choices allow more people to shop over the internet. Just over half of Mexicans use regular banks and services from fintech firms, let the rest buy online and pay quickly with QR codes, prepaid cards, Buy Now Pay Later arrangements, and electronic wallets. Last year, people started using Mercado Pago, Clip, and CoDi more than 30%, and several apps now include these payment options. According to PPRO, more than 60% of shoppers now go for online payments rather than cash or cards. With improved technology, companies selling fewer products or services can now offer their goods internationally, change-free or free from delay by the banks

Regulatory Developments

The Mexican government is placing focus on promoting free and fair e-commerce by introducing new rules. In 2024, the government began action against online sellers who evaded tax payment. The rules mean all businesses must file online tax forms, duties are added to low-cost imported goods mainly used in fast fashion, and customs monitoring is made tighter. Mexico placed new tariffs on products from countries that don’t have free trade with Mexico, causing Temu and Shein to become less popular. The rules, Reuters reports, are meant to protect local small and medium-sized enterprises and ensure opportunities are equal. With the new limits, shoppers are choosing nearby and regional companies, so both these platforms have to improve their rules and how products are delivered.
